The birds are chirping, daffodils blooming and the sun is finally beginning to make an appearance, but that dreaded feeling still looms – it’s time for the great spring clean.
While daunting at first, a spring clean isn’t so overwhelming when broken down into manageable tasks and will really refresh your home for the new season.
But where to start?
Take a look below for our top tips on how to declutter your home this spring …
1. Reorganise your kitchen –
The kitchen is a magnet for clutter, the room where random items seem to accumulate, creating chaos and making it hard to find the things you need.
Start by emptying your cupboards of all those herbs, spices and condiments and display them on your countertop – this way, you can easily see what you actually have in your cupboards. Throw away any out-of-date products and only keep those that you know you’ll use. Carefully organising your goods so you can see what you have will reduce food wastage and avoid repeat buying. This could be as simple as arranging the cupboards, so jars are easily seen, or grouping items together in a neat basket to reduce mess.
In terms of kitchen equipment, prioritise things you use on a day-to-day basis and organise your spaces so they can be easily accessed. Kitchen cupboard dividers are a great solution to avoid clutter without much fuss!
2. Master the closet chaos –
One of the most overwhelming areas of your home, wardrobes, are often problem areas for most households. However, arranging your wardrobe “Marie Kondo” style might be just the ticket to a mess-free space.
Begin by taking everything (yes, everything!) out of your wardrobe and into a pile so you can see everything you own and start to sort through. The KonMari method says to consider each item and ask yourself if it ‘sparks joy’ – if you’re limited on time, you can split this part up into categories of clothing i.e. t-shirts, trousers. You can then take any unwanted clothes and donate/recycle them.
Next up – organising your wardrobe. Marie has a famous folding technique which you can follow to expertly pack your clothes away, however arranging your clothes for easy access will be the key to avoid that wardrobe mess. Divide your space into sections (this can be clothing type, colour, occasion – whatever would be most useful) and neatly put them away.
3. Re-jig your living room –
A key area for the whole family, the living room must cater for everyone. Take some time to think about how the room is used, and whether certain pieces of furniture might be better somewhere else. For example, Aston Grays, a stunning four-bedroom period property located in the heart of Wimbledon, uses seating purposefully to maximise space and the light coming in from its bifold doors which lead onto the patio and garden. This is a great example of “less is more” in a living room design.
Freeing up the floor layout is a great way to create an open and airy atmosphere, making the living room feel larger and more inviting. This can be easily achieved by using vertical space – put up shelves and wall-mounted storage to show off your favourite books, knick-knacks and plants in style! This way, you’ll free up precious room for quality time with friends and family (without having to change the room layout too much!)
From reorganising the kitchen and taming your wardrobe to refreshing your living room layout, there are plenty of simple ways to declutter your home this spring. So, roll up your sleeves, dive into those cluttered corners and welcome the new season with an organised home.
